Almost a decade ago, I decided red wine was too much of a stain risk and that white wine was the way to go
And I’ve been choosing white wine over red ever since… that is until I was introduced to Basse Felix Estate’s Red Pinot (2009) at Clarences late last year. I was impressed by how smooth it was and how well it matched my meal.
I’ve had many more evenings filled with Pinot Noir since…
There was a P themed BYO Wine night run by Perth Wine Blogger Good Drop. No surprises which type of wine was most popular that night!
I had the pleasure of trying amongst many (there were 10 or so of us and we each came with a bottle)…
The Capel Vale 2010 Pinot Noir from Western Australia…
Phi 2010 Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley…
That night I learnt the way you hold your wine glass and the shape of the glass makes a huge difference to the taste. The explanation was rather scientific, for instance I was told the molecules react to changes to temperature created by the warmth of our hands which in turn affects the taste. I’d be keen to do a wine appreciation course to learn more.
My next solid wine weekend was thanks to Wine Selectors who sent me a sample of their Autumn Collection to try over Easter.
Of course the first bottle we opened was a Pinot Noir The Riposte by Tim Knappstein No 1 Pinot Noir 2010 from Adelaide Hills complemented our seafood feast put on by my Italian mother-in-law on Good Friday really well. It was smooth and light which I enjoyed being a red wine beginner but my sister-in-law prefers her pinot with a bit more body.
We also tried the Keith Tulloch 2010 Semillon from the Hunter Valley…this was an evenly balanced wine with a nice mix of fruitiness (wasn’t too fruity or dry). It was very refreshing and a great treat on a warm Easter Monday.
So that’s my wine story Keen to hear if anyone else has a preference for white or red wine and if it is a weather thing or something random as avoiding stains like me!
