Toast, Shop 21/60 Royal Street, East Perth, (08) 9221 0771
I have been meaning to try Toast and Sayers for sometime now - especially after hearing all the raving reviews and also in my search for a Perth version of Cirque where I had the most amazing mascarpone pancakes.
So on the weekend, before going into town to shop til we dropped, my friend and I went to Toast to see what it was all about. I was also really keen to try out Sayers but opted for the more relaxed waterfront Toast. Parking in East Perth was easy and there was a really nice ambience about the place.
The first thing I noticed about Toast was how nice and chirpy the staff was. To save our table, my friend and I took turns ordering and both were pleasantly surprised with the service. There was a staff taking / putting orders through to the kitchen and another making coffee. As we were waiting to order our food, the staff making the coffee took our coffee orders and just as I’ve sat back down my latte $3.80 was served.
The latte was really nice - not too strong, not too weak. My friend who had raved about Toast so much that it moved up my ‘to eat list’, actually walks all the way from her office to Toast specifically to buy her coffee each morning rather than getting it from one of the cafes on Royal Street - now that’s dedication!
I ordered the toasted english muffin with ham, poached eggs and hollandaise $15.90 (good price!), the hollandaise sauce was delicious and at first I was so hungry I wasn’t sure it would fill me up but I could barely move afterwards.
The meal was nice and I would have it again but it was not too much different from what I’ve had before at other good breakfast cafes. My friend had the corn fritters with avocado, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce $17.50 and absolutely loved it, she thought the fritters were moist / tasty and a perfect combination with her eggs (she doesn’t eat bread so I discovered that morning!).
We also both ordered a fresh watermelon juice $6.50 (there were also freshly squeezed orange and grape juice on the drinks menu), the watermelon juice was just juiced the normal way and served in a glass with a bit of ice. I wasn’t blown away by the taste but I do love my watermelon really sweet and I’m extremely fussy about them so I’m probably a harsh critic…I wished I had gone with my craving for the fresh orange juice though.
Overall, I enjoyed my brunch experience, the food was nice, I loved the waterfront setting and the service was fantastic - I’ll have to come back and try the crepes next time!
