Kid friendly Perth spots - where to hang out with a baby & a toddler

4

I’m a full time kid wrangler these days to an almost 3 year old and 4 month old (both boys). As great as this is, the days can get hectic and so I like to take them out to kid friendly Perth venues, more for my sanity and to keep kid #1 occupied and entertained. My evenings of dining out at night are few and far between these days so the weeks are filled with kid friendly places like the Jungle Gym, zoo, cafes and parks. I want to go to places that welcome the madness that come with children and not be a burden to patrons who are trying to enjoy their coffee in peace.

These are some of my favourite kid friendly Perth outings…

1. Blacksmith Perth in Highgate

Kid friendly Perth spots - blacksmith

I was actually introduced to this place a few months ago to meet up with foodie cravings herself and junior burger and I LOVE IT! I’ve been back several times since with girlfriends who have children and it’s my go to when we don’t want to catch up at someone’s house. The café is quite rustic and homely inside; great for adults but the back is a mother’s group paradise.

You walk through a dimly lit, quite intimate venue to a large, light and airy space where the kids can go nuts. There are several long tables available, perfect for large group catch-ups and if you phone up, they allow reservations. A large sandpit is housed to the left and to the right is a cubby house type room where there’s kitchen equipment, chalkboard and toys. The kids can literally wander amongst the tables and no one bats an eyelid because honestly, you’d only venture out there with a rug rat in tow.

There are change table facilities in the bathroom and they offer a decent food menu for both adults and children. The babycinos are $2 each and the money goes to PMH. Plus there’s plenty of space for manoeuvring a pram or stroller. Awesome.

2. Lo Quay River Café

Spicy pulled pork quesadilla - $17.50

This place is fantastic and now that the weather is warming up, somewhere I’ll be heading back to regularly. Located next to the river, it’s an idyllic spot to head to with the kids and enjoy your coffee, cake or something more substantial if you wish.

They take reservations and are able to accommodate large groups. There’s lots of outdoor seating (shaded by trees) and high chairs are available, all of the plastic variety so its not a drama with how the kids eat.

The playground is brilliant and although not fenced in, it is far away enough from the water not to be an immediate hazard. There’s a swing set, fort, slide and a tap that creates a stream so be prepared for your child to get sandy and wet. It’s a paradise for both parents and children.

3. Ruby’s Bakehouse

As well as offering great food, Ruby’s Bakehouse location is ideal for parents of young children. Less than 200m away is a shaded playground which is fully fenced in. You can order your coffee and cake or whatever takes your fancy then take a seat at the picnic table whilst the kids go crazy. My full review of Ruby’s Bakehouse is here.

4. Little Creatures

I really love Fremantle and it’s such a child friendly place. The weekends are rammed but it’s so chilled out and the place is noisy so it’s not a problem if your kids are too. It’s all drowned out by the chatter of patrons, the banging of cutlery and the noise from the kitchen.

I’ve eaten inside with my family and because the menu is mainly share plates, it’s ideal for little hands too. The pizzas are delicious and the last time we dined there, we ordered the beef brisket that was melt in your mouth. Frites are a must and they’re so more-ish, they easily get polished off, washed down by a cider. Out the back gets busy with families, as there’s a sandpit for the kid.

What’s not to love if you’re able to get out, socialize and children are welcome too.

5. Deep Water Point

The café is closed with a new Dome café to be constructed at the site so in the meantime, food trucks have taken over the space. The trucks are on rotation and you can find out what’s there daily via their facebook page.

Located next to a shaded playground which is fenced in (gotta love a contained play area) the kids can go nuts while you chill out and enjoy coffee or something to eat whilst enjoying the view.

I’ve headed down several times since the food trucks have taken over and they’re great. Jumplings and That Food Truck often make an appearance and they both provide fresh, quality meals that are a huge hit with the locals.

I love socialising and eating so if I can combine the two, it’s a match made in heaven. Always like to try somewhere new but can’t beat eating Vietnamese or Japanese food at a local haunt. I’m excited to explore more of what Perth has to offer and will base my reviews on food, service and the atmosphere of a restaurant.

  1. Great article, thank you. As someone who loves to give kids interesting experiences that also provide opportunities to learn how to socialize in public, I love lists like this that don’t include just the typical go-to spots for kids. I like to get out with the kids and I know that so many other parents of young kids do as well. I feel it is so important that I devote a great deal of my own site to offering advice and product reviews for being on the go with the little ones. Now, that I have read this, your pictures have made me hungry. Read more at https://www.roamingmommy.com mariana@roamingmommy.com
    • Thanks for your comment, Roaming Mommy. You’re right, it’s important children learn how to eat and socialise in public. These kid friendly places are perfect for parents and children. I’ll be checking out your site too.
