I met Emma Kenton, publisher and founder of Oh Hello Beaufort magazine when I was volunteering on the Beaufort Street Network executive board before junior burger came along. When I first met her, Emma was the General Manager for West Australian Publishers and she was an absolute go getter. She knew her stuff, loved Beaufort Street and just got things done regardless of how busy she was. I just knew one day she was going to create something amazing with all that passion, wisdom and wit - and she did.
Here’s my interview with Emma about Oh Hello Beaufort and of course her favourite eats in Mount Lawley, my second home…
What inspired you to create Oh Hello?
Sitting as a volunteer on the Beaufort St Network saw me interacting with business owners and residents and I felt that there was a need for a niche publication that could encourage people to shop local and to know more about the history and community of Beaufort St and its surroundings. Also because it is my favourite place to be!
You are an incredible multi-tasker, what does your typical day involve?
No one day is the same. I also run two other small businesses and so I chop and change from each. I try to be more structured but sometimes you just have to run with it. But generally I’m talking to businesses, getting story ideas, chatting with contributors, walking the street to deliver mags, working on event ideas and selling ads!
Are there plans to expand Oh Hello Beaufort beyond Beaufort Street? And where can we find copies of Oh Hello?
I would love to have an Oh Hello Leederville or Oh Hello Vic Park one day but that’s a fair way off given I’m doing the whole thing on my own at the moment, as a passion project in my spare time! You can find copies of Oh Hello Beaufort in most businesses along the street but if you want to pick up a copy to take home then you are best to grab one from either DeVine Cellars, Method Clothing, Mt Lawley Art Framers, Beaufort Realty, Acton Realty or UnchARTed Collective.
Lastly, what are your favourite eats on Beaufort Street?
Clarence’s, El Publico, The Brisbane, Three Coins and Cantina. My favourite coffee is from Standby. I’m also really excited to try Highgate Drink and Dine when it opens! Will be nice to have Sam Ward back on the street 🙂
