I’m excited to be the official blogger for Taste Great Southern 2016 which is from 17 March - 3 April. I visited Western Australia’s Great Southern when I was pregnant with junior burger and said to burger boy I wanted to take junior burger to see this beautiful region when she was out and about. Fast forward 2 years, I spent yesterday on a road trip with my mum, brother and junior burger to Albany thanks to Quality Suites Banksia Gardens Albany and Denmark Tourism.

These are the Taste Great Southern events we have planned for our little whirlwind family getaway which by the way we haven’t done since I was 18 - more than a decade ago!!
ALBANY FARMERS MARKET
Where: Collie Street, Albany
When: 19 March, 26 March, 2 April 8am – 12pm
When I visited the Great Southern two years ago, I just couldn’t get enough of the produce and I loved that I was given the opportunity to meet the local producers. Everyone we met welcomed burger boy and I into their businesses and homes like old friends. Read The story behind Oranj Tractor, a small organic winery near Albany here from my last visit.
We are heading to Albany Farmers Market this morning for our first family outing. I was a little nervous about driving 4 and a half hours with junior burger in the car but my little corolla down did great and the rain held off (phew!). I have no idea how we managed to fit all our luggage but I know we are definitely going to have to make room to take back fruit and vegetables.
THE OLD MARRON FARM
Although there’s no official event at The Old Marron Farm, I’m taking junior burger to see the aviary and animal farm whilst my mum and brother indulge in freshly cooked marron.
Check out my post about the The Old Marron Farm here - I absolutely recommend visiting if you are travelling anywhere near it.
THE GREAT SEAFOOD STEAMBOAT - LIBERTE AT THE LONDON HOTEL
I met Amy Hamilton two years ago on my last visit to Albany when she was the Executive Chef at Three Anchors (read my post about the feast she put on for us here). Amy’s passion for the produce/region was admirable and every dish she cooked for us was amazing.
So I was excited to hear Amy has since become the new owner for Liberte at the London Hotel, a French styled wine and cocktail bar and absolutely can’t wait to drink and eat at The Great Seafood Steamboat tonight.
My mum will be looking after junior burger while my brother Jason and I enjoy some charcoal grill at sunset with a cocktail in hand and a seafood steam boat paired with local wine.
For those of you who can’t make it to Albany, Amy will be bringing Liberte to Perth this Tuesday 22 March 7 – 10:30pm for a Taste Great Southern event at Must Wine Bar (where she started out as a dishy many years ago!). Amy will be putting on a four course shared table feast with matched wines from the Great Southern. Tickets are $135 and available via the Taste Great Southern website.
BREAKFAST FLIGHTS WITH BECK AND CALL COFFEE
Where: Six Degrees, 70 Stirling Tce, Albany
When: 20 March 9 – 11am
Tickets: $45 pp via Taste Great Southern website
Both my brother Jason and I are coffee addicts. So this Taste Great Southern event by Albany’s Six Degrees and local roaster Beck and Call Coffee has all kind of appeals – coffee matched with breakfast dishes inspired by the same countries of origin – yes please!!
STREET FOOD MARKETS AT DUE SOUTH
Where: Due South, 6 Toll Place, Albany
When: 20 March from 12 – 5pm
I can’t wait to eat my way through this world street food festival this Sunday. Set to be a family friendly event with live music and activities for the kids, I’m excited to be able to take junior burger with me – I’m sure she’ll do her fair share of eating – she’s got a good appetite and dare I say eats more than my dieting mum these days 🙂
