Dim sum hopping to find Perth’s best Dim Sum

Last month on a Saturday, I did a dim sum hop with my fussy Chinese mum for City of Perth and TweetPerth. We ate at Perth city’s most popular dim sums in less than 3 hours to come up with this final list of must visit dim sums along with tips on what to order at each.

Fortune Five Chinese Restaurant

On weekends you’ll always spot a line at Fortune Five Chinese Restaurant – a clear sign that the dim sum is worth the wait. Be sure to go early especially on Sundays, grab a ticket and join the crowds outside, as there’s no phone back service.

The prices are reasonable and you can’t go wrong with anything you choose but if you don’t have favourites that you have to have every dim sum visit, give these a go.

Steamed BBQ Pork Buns– the bun is soft, fluffy and generously packed with a sweet barbeque pork filling

Steam Salted Egg Yolk and Custard Bun– on first bite, the steamed bun just oozes out with a sweet chunky egg custard

Deep Fried Prawn Dumplings with Mayonnaise– the prawns are huge and tastes amazing in the crunchy deep fried batter. My mum reckons “its value for money”.

Fortune Five Chinese Restaurant is owned by five couples who are all hands on in the business so the dim sum is always consistently good and unlike other dim sums in the Perth city, you don’t get charged a surcharge for paying with your credit card.

Location: 108A James Street, Northbridge

Open for Dim Sum from 10am weekends and 10:30am weekdays until 3pm.

Dragon Palace

This is the cream of the crop when it comes to dim sum in the Perth city. You pay more and the setting is fancier, but the quality of dim sum does match its more premium price.

It is a larger space so if you go early, around 11am on a Saturday you should be able to score a table straight away, otherwise be prepared to wait outside with your ticket.

Once you’re in, if you happen to have the luxury to choose which table you’d prefer, don’t sit at the back on the platform because the dim sum trollies don’t seem to frequent this area as much.

As per Fortune Five Chinese Restaurant, you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes at Dragon Palace. Do however make sure you order the prawn dishes as the prawns at Dragon Palace are the best you’ll find at any Perth dim sum.

I would definitely recommend the prawn dumplings which are just amazing, the skin is soft and the prawns are sweet and plump.

If you like your spice and don’t mind soft textures, the fried XO Radish Cake is worth a try. It’s a more fusion take on the traditional radish cakes and is really tasty with the spicy sweet chilli sauce.

Dragon Palace charge a 2% surcharge for credit card payments and have plenty of high chairs.

New Moon

New Moon is your more casual kind of dim sum restaurant and has always been one of my favourites. Service is friendly and they consistently make my favourite dishes well. New Moon is open for dim sum on Friday and Saturday nights, a first in Perth!

On Saturday, we took away the Flake Egg Tart and Crispy BBQ Pork Puff Pastry. The egg tart was warm and the pastry was flakey like puff pastry but still buttery and crumbly like shortcrust pastry. The BBQ pork pastry was packed with the sweet BBQ meat filling with a flakey pastry.

Over the years I’ve always loved the steamed BBQ pork buns, steamed & deep fried prawn dumplings, century egg and pork porridge and glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf – all worth ordering.

Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant

Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant is the old Regal on Roe except much, much better. We ran out of room to dine in so we took away dessert and boy am I glad we did as dessert didn’t last the afternoon.

The coconut sago with watermelon and the warm steamed sponge cake (featured below) were both delightful. While we were waiting we did spot the BBQ pork buns which looked great.

So next dim sum will be at Canton Bay Chinese Restaurant as we’re keen to go back and try the rest of the menu.

Five of the four popular Perth dim sums we tried last month were featured in this post, the fifth one used to one of my regulars but the food quality we tried that day didn’t make the cut. Safe to say we had plenty of leftovers.

I’m keen to do a dim sum hop in the suburbs but I think I’ll need to round up some more people to help me eat as two stomachs are just not enough!

I wanted to go to dragons palace, based upon your recommendation. I looked at the menu and they serve shark fin soup! The practice of shark finning is reprehensible and I will take my money elsewhere.
