Date night with burger boy at The Trustee & San Churros


Last week, thanks to Eat Drink Perth I had a romantic date night with burger boy at The Trustee Bar & Bistro in Brookfield Place.


We were given a budget of $150 and the choice of one Eat Drink Perth passport venue. It wasn’t hard to pick a venue for our date night as I LOVE The Trustee and haven’t blogged about them despite eating there many times over the years.

Plus, after visiting The Albany Marron Farm earlier this year burger boy has been going crazy for marron and it just happened The Trustee’s Eat Drink Perth special for the month of April is a full Manjimup marron with the choice of a WA bevy (West Winds Gin, Little Creatures beer or Howard Park wine) on the house to match! burger boy of course went the West Winds Gin 🙂

With the weather cooling down, I was keen for a glass of red so The Trustee staff who was looking after us put me onto a glass of the Bertaine et Fils 2012 Pinot Noir ($13 by the glass) which was perfect. It was fruity without being too sweet.


On first glance of the menu, the oysters jumped out at us so we ordered half a dozen ($4.20 each or $42 for a dozen) as and a serve of Esperance half shell scallops to share as our entrees…


We ordered 4 crumbed oysters and 2 natural…


I absolutely loved the crumbed oysters especially topped with the wasabi mayo. I’m not a huge wasabi fan so I was happy that the wasabi wasn’t too overpowering. burger boy enjoyed the crumbed oysters too but preferred them natural, in his words “you can really taste the flavours of the oysters natural”.

That night burger boy announced that oysters were his favourite seafood 🙂 and the following day he went out to Kailis Brothers to buy us oysters for Good Friday.

The half shell scallops ($30) which were served with a tapenade gel and chorizo were ok but not a stand out. We could have easily had more oysters in its place 🙂


burger boy’s marron main ($55) came with sides of duck fat potatoes, slaw and truffle mayo…


burger boy prefers not to mask his seafood with sauce so he had his marron all natural and reckons quality seafood should speak for itself. He thought the marron was fresh and the serving was generous. 

My wagyu flank ($42) was served with roasted pumpkin, asparagus, walnut and goats curd…


My wagyu flank was cooked medium to well-done perfectly. The wagyu flank was a bit on the salty side when eaten alone but with the pumpkin and sides it was fine.

We probably didn’t need this massive bowl of shoestring fries ($9) but I couldn’t help myself…


I also enjoyed a Passionfruit and Grapefruit Mojito mocktail in The Trustees rustic setting…


Our meals at The Trustee as always is great, service is quick and food is consistently good. The portions are generous and we never leave hungry.

I had very little room left after dinner at The Trustee but a voucher had arrived from San Churros that afternoon inviting us to try out their new Winter menu so we went for a drive into Northbridge.

As soon as we walked in I knew I couldn’t resist these macarons…


burger boy and I shared a salted caramel and a raspberry macaron. The macarons were $2.70 each which I thought was good value for the taste and size…


As well as a single serving of churros with dipping chocolate ($8.95)…


The dipping chocolate was beautiful but the churros would have tasted better freshly fried per order. Although I understand from an operations perspective it might not be possible – especially after attempting to make churros myself over the weekend.

I personally like my churros from Mad Mex which is cooked to order. I used to have them all the time whenever I had sugar cravings back when I was working in my corporate day job.

Safe to say we both rolled home very slowly after our date night!
